Internet Security

Discover Financial Services recognizes that many consumers are apprehensive about using their credit card to purchase products and services over the Internet for concerns that their account number and other personal information could be intercepted or read by a third party. We consider Internet security a top priority. We have implemented rigorous security measures on our Internet systems that are compliant with the most recent developments in secure transaction standards.

A Word to Discover Financial Services Cardmembers...

When shopping on the Internet, we recommend that you use a browser that is SSL-capable. Using this type of browser will ensure that your payment will be encrypted. A third party who tries to eavesdrop or intercept your transaction will not be able to view your account number or other personal information. Please contact your software provider to determine if your browser is SSL-capable. Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer (versions 3.0 and higher) are two examples of SSL-capable browsers. You can download the latest versions of these browsers from their Web sites.

However, using your SSL-capable browser is not enough. In order for your transaction to be successfully encrypted to the merchant, the merchant's Web site must also be SSL-capable. The merchant's Web site may mention that they are using a secure server, but this may not always be the case. You should rely on the features of your SSL-capable browser to notify you whether the merchant's server is secure or not. If you are using Netscape Navigator and are connected to a site residing on a secure server, you will see a solid blue line at the top of the page and a solid key at the bottom left corner. If the connection is not secure, the key will be broken in half. If you are using Microsoft's Internet Explorer, you will see a padlock in the lower right corner whenever the connection is secure. You may also be able to configure your browser to show an alert whenever you enter or leave a secure space, when connected to a site residing on a secure server, as well as warn you when you are sending a document that is not secure.

If you have doubts about the security of a merchant's Web site, we recommend that you contact the merchant by phone or fax in order to submit your order.
